Performances of two plays, which, together with the new comedy, formed the nucleus of Spanish Baroque theatre, in the so-called Golden Century (17th Century).
These dramatic, one-act plays were about a thousand verses long and their main purpose was to extol the faith and the mystery of the Eucharist. The characters portrayed do not represent real people, but abstract concepts such as Humanity, Grace, Desire or Sin. The Sacramental Plays were first performed inside churches, but were later held in the main square of the towns.
