The Bather

Estatuilla del Baño

The anonymous statuette of the Bather is sculpted in bronze and is located in front of the former Pescadería baths, on Calle Cara. It represents a young naked woman getting ready for her bath, thus alluding to the baths. The base of the statue features an inscription of the following verses by the Cordovan poet from the Umayyad era, Ibn Shayd:

Astounded by the beauties of these baths,
time has come to tinge
the skylights on your ceiling
with the blushes of the twilight.

The Pescadería baths referred to are the former Arab baths or hammam, dating from the Caliphate period (10th century) and renovated in the 14th and 15th centuries. The complex was declared a Site of Cultural Interest and named a Historic Site in 1954. At present, the baths are closed to the public but their restoration is in the pipeline.
